|  | : I once had a base this short. I mounted it like shown in the pictue, i.e. flush with the rear. I has the problem you described. i.e. too little stability in front. Didn't like it at all and got me a longer base.

 I have a short base and the plate is kinda centered.  So its between the 2nd and 3rd one I guess.  Does allow me to get on my toes well and dampens any hits of rocks.  I think I might try a full base plate for skatepark next time around.  I dont get on my toes, least not now.  Would it interfere with carving the bowls?  Does it cause the skates to rattle?
 
 After taking my art boots on the asphalt, I really dont recommend the short plates flush to the rear nor metal plates either!
