What do you think?
Vert rollerskating has been underground for over 25 years. We have always been a minority in extreme sports and I am curious if anyone would mind if we became more main stream? I am guessing that most of us old school skaters are used to skating alone at skateparks and only know a few other rollerskaters. This forum has made me aware of the skaters in the world, but there are not many of us. As I am getting older and realizing how much skating has meant to me, I feel like we need to progress this sport. How would you feel seeing young kids rollerskating at your local park or ramp? I know there are pros and cons of a sport becoming popular and commecialized, but I am starting to feel like I want to do something for our sport. I think that most people on this site are pioneers and legends. When I was 14 years old skating my local park I never cared about publicity or recognition. Now that I am getting older, not only have I seen our sport not grow, but I think it will not exist once we are too old to skate. I had an idea last night to change this and will pursue it on monday. Just curious how you all feel about it? Wouldn't it be cool to teach these young groms to skate the way we do? We all know of a few amazing skaters that deserve recognition. I skated with some amazing skaters in Europe and here in the U.S. we all know about Fred Blood and Duke Rennie. I am sure there are many more, but our sport is so underground. I think that before I have to stop skating, I would like to introduce our sport to the masses and leave a legacy. I am guessing my pitch to the company that I will talk to won't get any traction, but I think we can all do something to spread the word of our sport. What do you all think?

I think most of us (including me) like to see some fresh blood in vertical roller skating. And I think it is a good idea to share everything you know about it with everyone who wants to know.

That being said, I don't believe that being underground is such a bad thing. I personally am not very interested in recognition by the media. I have to admit that I have stopped watching TV. I believe that it competely steels your time and doesn't give back much besides of a manipulated view of the world. To me, roller skating always was a bit of a counterculture. I do not think it is for the better of roller skating to go after the masses. I just think about how inline got destroyed by being sucked up too much into the mainstream. It didn't have a chance to develop its own culture. I would not like to see roller skating going the same way. I'd rather like to see roller skaters doing their own thing.

To summarize: Support everyone who wants to roller skate and withstand the lure of mass (un-)culture.

It's amazing how a little booze can get you sentimental. I think I was just sick of not having anyone to skate with. I must remember to stay off of the forum when I have been drinking. lol

I will skate with you one day! I've never had another quad skater to skate with, so when I do, it will be amazing.

Guess I am too much used to this situation by now. Where I skate, there is almost always no one else. Ah, the good old time when you could just go to a ramp, meet like-minded skaters, and have a good session ...

Hihi. When I have a bit too much alcohol (which is very seldom the case), I get to tired to type.

Yeah, I usually try to stay away from drinking during the week, but no skating is making me bored. My neck and back are killing me, but I am dying to try my new wheels. Hopefully, I can have a session tomorrow.

I hope that you get your neck and back into shape. Skating will probably help.

My opportunities to skate are also getting scarce. It's getting dark early now. :-(
