I could not find the exact ones that I want, but these are pretty cool. You can jump six feet in the air. I wish the Reidel or Sure Grip would put their engineers to work and make us some awesome vert skates.

Looks pretty dangerous to me!

Hehe. You don't want to build yourself ...

The bets are on if there will be a usable industry vert skate. Hasn't happened in decades!

Well, Lisa keeps mentioning how derby girls are doing it. I hope she is right. But I see girls come to the park every now and then on either inlines or a skateboard. They go up and down a few flat small ramps, giggle, fall, stand in the waay and then I never see them again.

So I'm not sure if the derby girls are just using bowls as a banked track which requires no special skate or if they are wanting to get serious about it. What I have heard elsewise is that derby girls are using the bowls to train inside them, as a derby track, nothing more. But I hope Lisa is right!

I'm putting together a "how to" page on my website now hoping that beginners might see it and it might help get others started. I want to skate with another roller skater one day.

That's great. Could be that this works out completely different than imagined.

There is no-one left here for about 100 km. 15 to 20 years ago there were quite some roller skaters and you could have lots of funny sessions. But it's not only the vertical roller skater who have diminished in numbers. There are also fewer skateboarders, fewer inliners, fewer everthing on the half pipes. May Duke Rennie got it when he refers to roller skaters as a "dying breed".

On a positive note: I am pretty sure that you will skate with other roller skaters some day. Probably not in 2007, though.

You are right about that! Still no job and applying to other jobs now. I am doing a job now as a test, an image slideholder in JavaScript. I thought I had it, I dont. Worked all day and last night too. Works without the images and text but not with. Back to the coding board...... But come next summer, I am going to rip it up with Eric! Hes going to show me some tricks. It will probably be the best day of my life. :-D

Yeah, also disappointed. The newpaper that was there for the skate competition, I looked on the internet and no writeup on it at all. I will go and pick up the paper tomorrow to see if its written up at all. Well, to me anyway, skating is much more important then football, cross country, field hockey, volleyball, bummer. I still plan on training hard this next year to make a good impression to make some news. My leg is about healed so I should be back skating very soon.

Good luck! Programming requires a clear head, patience and persistence. Virtues you obviously have.

It's always good to have something to look forward to.

My view on the general media is quite pessimistic. I have come to the conclusion that they have no interest whatsoever to report on something interesting to me (or to you). There interest lies in selling their publication. Therefore they will always go for mass appeal (i.e. football and the like) and for sensationalism. You'd probably made it into the news if you had such a bad slam that you had damaged yourself beyond recognition.

I once was in the local paper. The reporter wanted to write an article about car-surfing with roller skates. I didn't want to push this into the general news paper in not to attract imitatators. Heck, there is people dying from car-surfing! We should show a bit of responsibility by not pushing this on the kids. The press should show a bit of responsibility. Therefore, I took him to a local contest which he liked very much and which he also mentioned in his article (calling me the "Godfather of roller skates" :-)). But he couldn't refrain from talking about car-surfing. The lesson I learned from this: It's best to keep away from the press.

It's too cold and too dark here to skate.

Well, patience, I dont always have lol, but persistance, YES. I still dont have it but I am enjoying the challenge. I like to think things through.....just like building my skates! So thick I found a nice path for me.

Got the paper. The article was disappointing at best. No I am not in it, the way they portrayed skating wasnt to my liking. You are right. They focused on the negatives, how its not for the feint at heart. One guy mentioned how he has broke almost every bone in his body. Well, to me that is not the focus of skating. Thats what I avoid and thats why I wear pads and think the kids are dumb for not doing so themselves. To me the focus is on the challenge, the FEELING, the ride, the thrill, the freedom, the speed. I wasnt happy in the article. Why dont they focus on how this guy broke x,y,z in football? I hope to never break anything and be injury free as much as possible. I'm working on getting my muscles strong to handle the exploisivness of it now.

This winter, I plan on doing freestyle to learn to rotate jumps and jump high for fun. I want something to complement it. I didnt find derby to my liking. If I get some money, I would like to take adult gymnastics too! I want to have fun til I die lol.

You got the point. I have come to the conclusion that you only "get" it by doing it. Therefore more roller skaters skating will be good for us, people not skating but wanting to "build the sport" or to "train the athletes" or "do the headlines" will ultimately hurt it. They are not in it for the reason you summarized so nicely in above sentence. You will never get the FEELING by not feeling it.

Yes, doing it is best. The spectators can see the joy and smile on my face. the thrill! I dont expect anything other then joy from it. I am going to put stuff together, how to's, in case someone else might want to learn to make it easier or just to help me lol. Skating is it though!!

Its also in roller derby big time. Hurting others isnt me and thats the focus of the derby image. I like to play hard and push myself to my own limits, but harm noone in the process. I dont want to be a member of a team called "Haters". I hate noone. Thats media though. I'll stay out of it if so.
