: : Hi, Majja,
: : Welcome to the forum. Alway happy to have another rollerskater join this growing family. Again, kudos to Bernhard, for creating this wonderful site for all of us to meet. I recently acquired Daniel from Vancouver. Until his relocation to the states, I was the only vert rollerskater in NYC. Though my skateboarder buddies are great, it's nice to have another rollerskater to hang with. I got my first rollerskates as a child and still remember how much fun it was then. But I could never have imagined how much fun it is now. Here's a pic from last Saturday. I can't recall any rollers from Scandinavia, though surely there must be some. It thrills me to know that this type of skating will continue with new skaters like you and Claudine joining up. Everyone on this forum is great, friendly and full of info and innovation. Good luck and welcome aboard mate.

Majja: Anyone from scandinavia? (26. Nov. 2007 20:47)
 Hello everyone
I´m a girl from Sweden who wonders if anyone know any scandinavian rollerskater girl? I was rollerskating when I was a little girl and I just loved it!!! I have tryed some inlines and a little skateboarding but that was nothing compered with the feeling I hade with my old school rollerskaters! I saw some clips on the web with vertical rollerskating and it was awesome! That thought has never stiked me that I could take my old rollerskaters to a vert. I really want to try it, but I have never skated in a vert before, therfore it would be great with some advises. What should I start with, tricks etc.?
Hope to get some responce and help.
Best regards Majja

 Hi Majja,
Welcome on Bernhard forum!!! I know nobody from Scandinavia, but maybe some of the forum members/readers know, in any case it's one of the rare places where you can find others vert quad skaters.
If you want to start learning vert, just use a helmet+other protecs and try (from the bottom!!!) to make circles, trying to go a bit higher at each loop. Try to learn to fall on your knee pads. Claudine has written the main tips here.
Don't forget to rest between 2 runs, I usually spend this time for analysing was good/wrong in the previous run, and thinking about what to do in the next run....
If you have fun, you will progress rapidly (See Claudine???)

Peace,

Zorg

I sent you back an email!

Everyone here is very nice. No need to worry for just starting. Most of these guys have been doing it for years but not me. Like I mentioned, just started this summer and totally fell in love with it. Its been the best time of my life since I started so trying to pass along what I've learned. Feel free to email me anytime cause always happy to help. And I will post some of my pics, my first tries and funny failures so you can learn from me and with me together. Or just humor yourself with my "goofy" skating. I'm just into it for fun and fun I am having. Oh cool! Its always nice to have another skating pal. :-D

Here is a good way to get "propped" to drop in. I do this sometimes. When I'm balanced, I just jump in! I just started back again from an injury droppin in and cant bend my knees much right now cause of 2 knee braces on, so the pics I have I really have to lean forward so I dont fall back. I cant wait to take off the braces (very soon!). I find most of skating is being loose in the knees and letting your body feel the changes and adjusting. I think this comes with time. So much is in the knees so I feel and look dorky right now. I thought I would post this cause there arent many pics on how to stand in the beginning before dropping in. Eventually most just stand and jump in but this is a nice way to start.

When I first did this, I would get up there and stand and think to myself, OMG, OMG, I'm gonna die lol! For a half hour at a time rofl. Then come back to it another day. But its really OK, just learn to fall on your knee pads and make a tripod with your hands/elbows and its no big deal falling. If you dont lean back which EVERYONE does in the beginning, you smack you a$$ and if so, collapse knees and choose a cheek cause otherwise it HURTS. I will put all the photos up on my website within a week and there are some funny pics of me flaling my arms and looking pretty goofy! Like I mentioned, so much is in knee bend and when you cant do it, its much harder and you look dorky.

Claudine, you had the courage to really drop into a ramp much sooner than me. Took me some years. Before that, I always did a kind of backward sit-in which I have never seen done by someone else. But it is the safest way to drop into a ramp!

 WOW Irene!!! You rock girl!
Thanks for your friendly feedback, you and Claudine really inspires me. It´s great that I can talk to you because my girlfriends here in Sweden thinks I´m crazy. For them i´ts like inlines on the beach in the summertime. But maybe I have talked atleast one over to start with rollerskating vertical....How old were you when you started skating vertical?

I cant wait to take off the braces (very soon!). I find most of skating is being loose in the knees and letting your body feel the changes and adjusting. I think this comes with time. So much is in the knees so I feel and look dorky right now. I thought I would post this cause there arent many pics on how to stand in the beginning before dropping in. Eventually most just stand and jump in but this is a nice way to start.
:
: : My first pics are below! I will put more up later this week, supposed to be doing homework first lol. I've only been at it since June(?) But no pics beforehand. Most would be of me on my butt laughing my ass off lol. I donno why, I fall and crack up. Take care, just keep at it and dont get frustrated cause it takes time. If you do get discouraged, feel free to email me cause I'm humble and will be encourageing. But I will be happy to post my first tries at grinding/slides. It will be funny to watch!
: :
: : : Hej Claudine - your the best, thanks a million for your mail and this mess.!! It feels much easier to start now, your webpage is perfect! You are so nice to me - it would be great to se some pic. of you when you started. I´m really impressed that you started this summer and allready are so good at it! For the first time I hope that the snow isnt coming soon so I can get started, I cant wait (I guess it´s my oldering crisis :-D ...)
: : : Hej då - Majja
: : :
: : : : I sent you back an email!
: : : :
: : : : Everyone here is very nice. :-D

: : : : : Hi Zorg
: : : : : Thanks a lot! Now I have an idea of how to start, thats great. Its to bad that you dont know any scandinavian person whos quad skating, but I´m going to try to take the inlines from at least one of my girlfriends so that I have someone to start with. That would be great..
: : : : : Again, thanks, Majja
: : : : :
: : : : : : Hi Majja,
: : : : : : Welcome on Bernhard forum!!! I know nobody from Scandinavia, but maybe some of the forum members/readers know, in any case it's one of the rare places where you can find others vert quad skaters.
: : : : : : If you want to start learning vert, just use a helmet+other protecs and try (from the bottom!!!) to make circles, trying to go a bit higher at each loop. Try to learn to fall on your knee pads. Claudine has written the main tips here.
: : : : : : Don't forget to rest between 2 runs, I usually spend this time for analysing was good/wrong in the previous run, and thinking about what to do in the next run....
: : : : : : If you have fun, you will progress rapidly (See Claudine???)
: : : : : :
: : : : : : Peace,

: : : : : : : Hello everyone
: : : : : : : I´m a girl from Sweden who wonders if anyone know any scandinavian rollerskater girl? I was rollerskating when I was a little girl and I just loved it!!! I have tryed some inlines and a little skateboarding but that was nothing compered with the feeling I hade with my old school rollerskaters! I saw some clips on the web with vertical rollerskating and it was awesome! That thought has never stiked me that I could take my old rollerskaters to a vert. I really want to try it, but I have never skated in a vert before, therfore it would be great with some advises. What should I start with, tricks etc.?
: : : : : : : Hope to get some responce and help.
: : : : : : : Best regards Majja

: : When I first did this, I would get up there and stand and think to myself, OMG, OMG, I'm gonna die lol!
:
: Claudine, you had the courage to really drop into a ramp much sooner than me. Took me some years. Before that, I always did a kind of backward sit-in which I have never seen done by someone else. But it is the safest way to drop into a ramp!

Really? I thought it took me a LONG time. I feel like I try things very hesitantly. But when I injure myself, I don't want to do that again soon so I slow down. Plus I don't have medical insurance. Just sometimes I get out there and have so much fun and forget I might hurt myself lol.

I am going to try stalls again this weekend. Its really hard to do things with a knee brace on but this park closes for the winter in 3 weeks and that was on my list. I'm going past the coping so now somehow I need to straighten myself up! Cant decide if front or back would be easier. Or try the spine lol.

Thanks for the kind words. When I came to this forum, honestly I was intimidated. I see pics of all you guys that are way beyond me, I'm embarrassed. But to learn its best to post and then newbies like Majja will be more open to post and try cause she knows then that its OK to start at the beginning and start smaller. I want to document my beginnings to where ever I get so people understand that it takes time and practice to get good and wont get discouraged.

ireNe: Anyone from scandinavia? (28. Nov. 2007 00:57)
I roller and ice skated at age 9. I skated my first skatepark around 1979, but didn't really get going til bout 1981. I started skateboarding there, but realized I was a much better rollerskater. I was just 20 then. In 1983, my son was born. My entire skate life has been weekends only, except for holidays and vacations. Hopefully it will not be too hard to convince people to learn vert rollerskating with you. Maybe skateboard or inlines are more comfortable for them. Just tell them how much fun they will be missing!

: WOW Irene!!! You rock girl!
: Thanks for your friendly feedback, you and Claudine really inspires me. It´s great that I can talk to you because my girlfriends here in Sweden thinks I´m crazy. For them i´ts like inlines on the beach in the summertime. But maybe I have talked atleast one over to start with rollerskating vertical....How old were you when you started skating vertical?
: Hej då, Majja :-D

You ladies are awesome! I love seeing new skaters. It is much easier getting back into skating, but much more frustrating. I thought by now I would have my flips and vert tricks back and I haven't even skated since my injury. I see a new chiroprator tomorrow and hope he can help. I will post a question on another thread, but I am getting a camera soon and look forward to sharing my progress. By the way, if you want inspiration just check out Irene. She rips and as far as I can tell she is quite the legend.

: Really? I thought it took me a LONG time. I feel like I try things very hesitantly.

There are really fundamentally different people. You can see it already with very small kids. Some just go for it and some are careful. Some are talented with respect to moving their body through space, some are not. I am very untalented with respect to sports and also very cautious. But I do like roller skating! So I just keep on doing it in my limited way. Almost all roller skaters I have met so far have always been cool and not looked down on me for not being so good as them. That has always been an additional motivation. I think this also has to do with the roller skating scene being small. When inline was big there were quite some inliners who got snobby.

: But when I injure myself, I don't want to do that again soon so I slow down.

Same with me but not with the "go for it" types. They seem to stop only when they really can't move any more.

: Plus I don't have medical insurance.

The US seem to be particularly bad in this respect. I have seen the film "Sicko" by Michael Moore. It seems that you are in trouble even when you have insurance. :-((

: Cant decide if front or back would be easier. Or try the spine lol.

I can't do a backside stall, so to me the frontside version is easier. Can be different for other people.

: When I came to this forum, honestly I was intimidated. I see pics of all you guys that are way beyond me, I'm embarrassed.

Hehe. There's something to reach out for! Yes, I have to admit: I particularly like the aesthetics of skate pics.

This is a very honorable job you are doing. I think every bit that helps vertical roller skating holding its own is a good thing.

Well, I skate regardless cause I LOVE it!! I had no expectations and I promised myself not to get into the competitive realm just cause that leads me to unhappiness. I did really well at competitive running in the past. I didn't have any idea how I would do in roller skating though or how far I will get and still dont, just I enjoy this more then anything else in the world. I'm small and lanky and can trip over my own two feet if I'm daydreaming lol so I don't know if thats good or bad or what. I've been going to the gym and lifting but I dont expectations there either, just to get stronger so I can skate harder. I try....

I'm proud how far I've gotten considering the circumstances. No medical insurance could be a disaster and I seem to like to hurt myself. So I must go slow cause I DO know the consequences. I should get medical soon I hope. But I really would rather skate lame then be injured just thinking about it. Dont get far during layoffs. Thats why I wear all those pads even though it looks a bit silly. If I were 8 yrs old, I would be doing all sorts of crazy things just cause back then I was built of rubber.

Hey, you are right about the roller skaters! Everyone here is awesome.. Most of the best inliners are really snobby I have noticed. I'm certainly not that way and dont care for people who are. So I'm proud to be a roller skater! I'm happy if I can contribute in my own goofy way lol. Its exciting to have another newbie here too cause I worry too that this sport is dying. I might try frontside stalls this weekend! :-D

Back in 1999, I worried that vertical roller skating was dead. Now I have the impression that it is pretty much alive.
