Finding Trucks
Hi Paul,

: I had to grind out my old axle from my freestyle indy and then buy a new indy....knock out the axle out of that one and then cut it down to size and put the old axle in....it works really well.....need to stop grinding so much crete....lol...

Can you write a small "How To" on this? I've talked to a guy who knows something about metalwork and he wasn't very confident about cutting a new thread on the old axle because he suspected that its hardness was to big. I would really like to publish such a "How To" on this site so that people who can't get a truck narrow enough can tailor a normal truck.

 I would like to share stuff with other rollerskaters and am interested to find out how many of us still do this type of skating.

I live in New York City and skate mostly vert ramps in skateparks. Love to skateboard, snowboard and sometimes, rarely inline street. Been skating since my early 20's, around 1980. My setup is: Riedell speed boot, Variflex baseplates with ACS 580 metal hangars (70's freestyle skateboard trucks), Flip wheels 99A 60mm, Powell Red Bones, metal grind bars attached to kingpins. My size 5 feet cannot accommodate grindrails closer to my feet.

No one knows for sure. But lots of surprises keep coming.

Do you know of a source for those ACS hangers? Or have your's just survived for so long? Powell wheels can still be obtained from South Eastern Skate supply as I have learned today.

 Yeah Irene!!!! Welcome, rad photos too. I love this forum!!!!! it is so cool to have some place to come and see shots of other Rollerskaters, I too am starting to feel like I am no longer alone. I rode my rollerskates for a while today at the Public park here in Wilmington. The wrist is feeling better and I am begining to feel like I can charge it again.

I found my trucks on eBay. These were hard to find, the 580 size (I'm riding these now, about 2.75" of truck between the wheels. I have the 500's (these are around) also found on eBay. I see lots of Bennett trucks. I think Independent still makes a small truck for freestylers. Maybe freestyle skateboarders have resources for narrower trucks. And of course, Tracker's mid and half tracks are around, maybe in magnesium?

Very happy to have a place with contacts to other rollerskaters!

 Sooo Great to hear you're skating again. Thanks for the links, good going. Excellent that rollerskates seem to making a comeback (Skechers was looking for rollerchicks awhile ago...trendy types, no need for skating skills, like that) and surely you are the frontrunner for bringing vert rollering to the public's attention. I now have this desire to rummage through my old photo collection, so I can submit every roller photo I have. There are at least 3 other skaters from around 1980-85, 2 out of the 3 rode side-stance. We are not alone!

My own trucks (Gullwing freestyle) are still in working order. Probably I will need a replacement some day. But I'm also trying to collect information that I can add to this site so that it becomes more useful.

 although I am a vert skateboarder I love seeing all of you still riding vert rollerskates! I was part responsible for a lot of GreenRampJams in Germany a few years ago which also had vert rollerskate divisions which sadly turned into vert inline divisions later! Keep it up boys and girls and keep skating sideways! I would love to see vert rollerskating make a big comeback!

You have to visit Freiburg then, too. No concrete bowls, but some half pipes and mini ramps.

BTW, we are in the process of organizing a local half pipe contest (skateboard and inline). Rollerskaters welcome if they come.

 Well I just used a bench grinder to grind out the axel from my old indy freestyle trucks....I was going to cut down the axel on the new indy trucks I bought and then tap a new thread onto it...I suspect it can be done but I couldnt find the right tape to buy....no doubt you could find it somewhere but I had to fix it fast...so using the old axle was the best bet at the time......I had to grind the old trucks just enough so as not to grind into the axel but enough so that I could get enough movement to break it out......and the new trucks I cut to size with a hacksaw before I bashed the hell out of the axel to get it out....I hear from some of my skateboarding mates that and oldsckool skateshop near me has a press that pushes out axels out of trucks...sounds to easy to me..lol...you do need a bench grinder to make all this easier though.....Had to shape the ends of the new trucks so that they didnt hit the inside of the wheels......all up though it was a good job...If I have to do it again I will try and tap a new thread on the new axel....hell even if you stuff a few trucks trying to make one it worth it in the long run....WE ARE ALL JUST TO HARDCORE......sk8 with 8....
