Olli: Vert-Rollerskating in the early eighties (18. Jun. 2003 16:21)
Hi there, my name is Oliver and I come from Muenster. I've been really surprised, what I found here (just looking for photos of Martin Broich at google.com). Unbelievable, cause I thought, there would be nobody anymore riding vert with rollerskates?! This is great!!

I began vert-rollerskating in 1987 in Senden, near Münster. It was the first Vert-Ramp in Germany, build completely in aluminium. There I skated until 1993, sometimes guys like Martin Broich, Thomas Kallack and others came to my hometown for having nice sessions. But I think 1993 was the year, when the Vert-Rollerskating-competition didn't took part at the Munster Monster Mastership? After that I also stopped skating but since 3 years I try again, sometimes in the really nice pool in Münster-Berg Fidel, maybe anybody knows? Enclosed two really old pictures of me in the late 80ties in the Senden-Ramp. It would be at all really interesting for me to know, if there are any other "Oldschoolers" around here inside these Forum, so please write...

Keep on skating

 Hi Oliver,

we started skating at almost the same time. I started at about 1984 in Freiburg. There are also some more vert roller skaters in Germany and even in Freiburg. They just don't raise their heads!

On Saturday, I had discussion with another vert roller skater on the subject how many active vert roller skaters there are in the world. I assumed that there have to be hundreds!

Do you still have contact with Martin Broich and Thomas Kallack?

I think you are right about the year when vert roller skating dropped out of the Münster Monster Mastership. But we could research this particular question. Maybe I have some old Monster magazines from this time ...

It's a pity that you didn't show up here sooner. We had a vert contest here in Freiburg and specifically called for "Skatboard, Inline and Rollerskate". If you had come, too, there would have been two roller skaters. Maybe next year?

There will be a report on this event at Sk8Mag.de.

 Hi again,

another time really suprised about the short response-time to my first entry in this forum :) But anyhow, I try to answer your questions. I still have contact to Martin Broich, cause he still lives in Münster. Have a look on the photo attached, this is Martin erarly last year. I know, that he's still skating, but mostly he is skateboarding. But in the early nineties we had some great sessions together, mostly in Senden but sometimes also in Havixbeck, Münster and once in the Tropica in Hemsbach. I think this was in 1990, cause it was my only contest, I took part. Thomas Kallack I never knew really good. But I think that he is living in Munich since years as a photographer (http://www.kalak.de/). And if the vert contest is taking part again next year, then I'll come maybe, but lots of tricks get lost about the past 16 years, so you'll win the contest anyway :) But maybe you can tell me, where you've been skating in the beginning of your "career"? Maybe we've seen us at any ramp in germany?! Would be nice to hear of you...

 Hi Irene,

thank your your warm welcome, but it's also great to know, that there are so many others here in this forum talking about this type of skating. Here are some more pics, but first a recent one, only two years ago :) But the others are much older.

But tell me about your roller-skating? Are you skating vert too and where are you skating? Would be nice to hear from you.

Greetings
Olli

: another time really suprised about the short response-time to my first entry in this forum :)

I think everyone here is just happy to hear from other people enganged in this crazy activity.

Give my regards to Martin Broich. Maybe he remembers me from Karlsruhe. And tell him that he should get on his roller skates!

I also participated once in a Tropica contest. It's been the one when Bo Elsbol knocked himself into the hospital when attempting a 900.

I can't even particate because I can't ride this ramp! Maybe next year ... But probably I stick to taking photos.

: But maybe you can tell me, where you've been skating in the beginning of your "career"?

I've been skating mainly in Freiburg and on ramps neat Freiburg. Some more places I've been to: Basel, Stuttgart, Adelberg, Tropica, Münster, Cologne, Bonn, Singen, Zürich, Zug, ...

I don't remember I've we have met in some place. Do you know Arne and Lars Languth?

Hi Bernhard, still in this moment I finished a telefoncall to Martin. Yes, he remembers you very well, he told me about the green ramp and stuff like this. He excuses himself for not writting back to you and this forum directly but within the next weeks we have in appointement here at my home. Then he promised me to bring along some good old (and maybe new?) photostuff and he affirmed me, that he is still Rollerskating :) So be prepared for some nice pics within the next weeks

Yes, shure, I know them, I met them once personally, I think it was about those days where the monster mastership took part in münster in 1989 or 1990. We smoked a big bucket alltogether, I think theres has been also Helge Tscharn, another brilliant rollerskater from the older days. But I definitively don't now, what they're doing now? But maybe you have heard about the Porno Twins? In memory here is a spectacular Interview taken from I thin the fifth issue of the monster magazin in 1987, I never read with less information, but who cares :) Enjoy

Great! I would love to have enough material of Martin to add a page about him to this site. Can you ask him if he wants to do anb interview?

Thanks for the interview! The twins skated a show in Freiburg some 300 m from the place where I lived in those days in Freiburg. It was some big inline promotion tour (I've still got a t-shirt) about 10 years ago.

BTW.: On aaturday I visited Bonn to take some pictures of the RhEINKULTUR Vert Jam. And guess whom I met there? Yep: Holger Sander who participated in the skateboard contest. But he also skated on his crazy roller skates. I hope I will have some pics of those on this site (in some weeks, maybe).

Helge's family name is Tscharn, so he is obviously the creator of this trick. It's a kind of twisted back-flip, but I don't remember in which way it's different from the classical Broich-Flip (the straight back flip invented by Martin Broich).

I think, most of the tricks done by roller skaters don't even had names. Probably because there alway were so few roller skaters to talk about them.

Hi Brian, what uncommon reunion inside this forum :) Yeah, this is right, we met each other and I'll never forget how you really trod me into my first drop in ever :). This has been in 1988 it think, it's was the year when the whole ice-skating hall in münster has been arranged as a big skatehall for the summertime. Maybe you remember the two blue vert-ramps, being combined through a spine? I think your motivation for treating me into the ramp has been, that my "Sit-in" has not been really authentic cause otherwise I made handplants and stuff like this :) But this is why I'm still thankfull to you. Since this time I never made again a "Sit-In", I swear :) so when your're the next time in germany, just visit Münster, this would be nice, we still have the pool, a big ramp indoor and last but not least lots of this oldschoolers still hangin around, so think about it.

Yesterday Martin Broich promised me again that that he will visit me within the next days, so hopefully it won't take too long time. Hope to hear from you soon, maybe you got a link where I can see some more pics of you rollerskating? Maybe some Worldcup-shots? would be nice.

I beleive the Tscharn-flip was a back flip with a half twitst so you would come down frontwards. Helge did them very smooth. I was lucky enough to see helge skate in Koln once '89 I think and once more at the Raging Waters pro am in San Jose that was '88 and one of the only rollerskate contest that I ever competed in here in the states.

Hey Derik,

great to hear from you! Tropica was quite the place at those times. So exciting to skate there! I haven't been there quite that often but in winter we used to hitchhike to Hemsbach since this was the nearest indoor place.
