I thought about filling the space under the jump bar (eg with cell blocks like Daniel did or some similiar material) to keep it from bending, then mount skateboard rails on top of the jump bar.

A lot of people cry they want someone to come out with vert skates – some of us experiment in our garage - but you are the first and only one with a truly professional retail mass merchandise module.

I can custom build the same exact set up on any Riedell boot (speed or other). I am still deciding which speed model to make the standard vert skate. I don't ride speed boots, so I would appreciate your advice.

Yes, the trucks are also Sure Grip. They are special ramp trucks that were made in the 80's for vert skaters in Denmark......or so i am told!

I have been riding these trucks for awhile now and am really happy with them. They are more responsive than the Indy 101's which I was riding before.

Wow! Those vert skates look really great :)

Are the pivot cups of the plates and the pivots of the hangers small
or large? Would the plates take skateboard hangers such as
Tracker Freestyle or Racetrack-S?

It's great to see that you offer three different hanger widths.
You write that the Bowl Bombers
have '6 5/8" trucks'. Does that refer to the axle length or hanger width?

(perhaps it would be helpful to add this data to the product pages?)

Thanks for the speed boot suggestions. I am looking for maybe two levels of quality. So probably the Reidell 122 or the 125 for the entry level and the 595 or the 395. Do you prefer the Riedell 595 to the 395?

Tobi,

They are the regular pivot cups for Sure Grip Super X plates. The pivots on the hangers themselves are much more rugged than tne normal Super X hangers. These plates unfortunately do not take skate board hangers.

We offer two different hanger widths. These being 5" and 6 5/8". This refers to the axle length from tip to tip. i will add this detail to the product page.

Perhaps you could provide both the axle length and the hanger width (hanger without axle) on the pages; sometimes stores/mailorders list trucks with hanger or axle width only, so if you provide both lengths, people can compare the widths much more easily.

 i was considering the Carrera Sport, the only issue with this boot is the sizing. They are sized REALLY small! Even though they are offered in sizes up to 13, this really only fits about a size 11!!

Does anyone else have an opinion on the choice for the entry level speed boot for ramp skates? Riedell 122, 125 or Carrera Sport?

How are things going with you Brian? I havent heard from you in ages!

What type of trucks are on these setups? I'm interested in the widest ones for myself. Are these also mounted onto SureGrip plates and can a grind bar mount onto these plates, as well?
For an inexpensive entry level speed boot, the Carrera Sport is a good choice, although only available in whole sizes, it is more durable that the other leather speed boots and offer more support. Toecaps from K2 work really well on these boots. If you need a contact, let me know, I just got about 5 pair for myself. I want to setup another pair with wider trucks, the better to grind with, my pretty...

It is great to hear from you! Another vote for the Carrera Sport, if you could send me the contact for K2 that would be fantastic! Part of the reason that I like hockey boots is the toe caps. I ride a lot of cement and do a lot knee sliding, without toe caps my boots die within weeks!

The trucks on my new skates are Sure-Grip Supreme Rollers. They are mounted on a Sure- Grip Super X plate. I am working on custom grind bars for them, but Century jump bars fit. You use jump bars for grind bars right? How does that work for you? Do they die quick? I noticed on the last photo you showed, there was only one instead of two like in your old setup, why did you change your setup?

How wide are the Sure-Grip Supreme Rollers mounted on a Sure- Grip Super X plate? I find that the jump bars don't slide especially well. I had some made from stainless steel, which slide well, but he didn't do a very good job on them... sloppy, rough cuts and holes. I ended up not using them because they made my trucks misaligned. I have only one jump bar now. My old setup had longer kingpins that could accomodate up to 3 bars, but when grinding the trucks 50-50 the kingpins got in the way, they were too tall. Using one bar requires bending them back straight after every skate session, so yes, they die quick. It's tough with small feet, not enough space between trucks to mount sliders on the boot bottoms.

 take a look at my old set up. i put jump bars on, then cut up board sliders to fill the space between bar and plate, thus creating a solid foundation, then i put another layer of slider over the jump bar.

if you have something solid between plate and jump bar, the bar will not bend your king pins

if your having a problem with the king pin sticking out too far with grinding, try cuting up some PVC pipeing and making coopers for your trucks, this will give you added clearance, so your king pin should not get in the way.

i just got solid plate stalls at the vert ramp at VANS. will be trying drop-ins soon.

 The supreme roller hangers come in two sizes. 5" axle and 6 5/8" axle. I am working on custom grind bars for these skates. They will be made of steel and be wider than jump bars for a better grinding surface. I am trying to work out the wrinkels in the design. Hopefully they will be out in the next month or so.

 how did you get the cut up sliders to stay in place between your jump bars and plates? What are coopers? You put these on the trucks to raise the grinding surface? With PVC pipe? Sounds crazy! The pics that you attached were too small for me to see your set up clearly.

 gee this may b hard to explain...

take board sliders and cut them into two pieces.

the piece that goes next to the plate has to be a bit shorter than the piece that goes next to the jmp bar.

the piece that will be under the jump bar should be longer and run the length of the jump bar.

center the shorter piece in the milddle of the longer piece.

glue the two pieces togehter.

the difference in length should only be enough to use thin stips of duct tape or zip ties to secure the longer slider to the jump bar.

put the two guled pieces unger the jump bar.

long peice flush with bar, shorter piece flush with plate.

take zip tie or thin stip of duct take and wrap around jmp bar and the longer part of the longer slider.

make sense???????

 copers are hard plastic cut up to fit over your trucks.

in the old day of pools, grinding was much easier if you had them vrs trying to grind the metal

pvc is a hard plastic pipeing used for pluming usually.

attached is one company version

with pvc you would just cut out enough so they "clip" onto the truck by themselves. cut more out of the middle to accomadate the king pin and not so much around the ends.

I don't know. Copers where quite common in the old days.

Drill holes into the base plate and use screws. For my own (imperfect) way of doing this, see my article on how to build a vertical roller skate. Of course, I didn't user standard roller skate plates.

 I thought about drilling into the plates but it is kind of a pain. The plates have writing in relief that gets in the way and I need something that is going to have a polished professional look.

I think that I will be stuck with steel custom made grind bars, I have found that if I use the right kind of metal then a support underneath is not necessary and the kingpins arent damaged.

 here's a couple of solutions I picked up from Mon Barbour & Jason Tubbs in the 80s. They both utilise zytel plates - Variflex and something called Pro8. The version on the Variflex gives most stability on slides, but is rather high. Jason Tubb got around this by building the whole lot up with skateboard riser pads and more rails. The Pro8 version was less stable but lower, which made it slightly more suitable for ACS580s, which I found suited me.

 cool set up

i used to have varaflex plates and acs trucks, i used a single slider, this looks much more stable.

good ideas are what keeps our tools progressing otherwise we would all still be on clay wheels and open ball bearings thanks!!
