THE BEGINNING
Hello, I think it is strange how Europe and the U.S. are always on different wave lengths. I grew up skating skateparks between 1979-1983. I then found backyard ramps, but it was not easy and it did not last. I think in twenty years I only skated for about two. I did find a skatepark in 1991, which was the Mike McGill skatepark in Oceanside California. I was the only rollerskater and did run into my mentor Paul Votava and that was when I was on inline skates. I travelled Europe and there were public parks everywhere. I did skate in Madrid and wonder if it was the same park. There were tennis courts and a running track. I took the bus in this foreign land and met some amazing rollerskaters. This place had an amazing capsule pool and a great bowl. I remember thinking how amazing Europe was because kids could skate and nobody worried about lawsuits. I even had the opportunity to skate the Munster Bowl, which was huge. Now, the U.S. has all kinds of public skateparks and most are free. I only wish I skated Europe on my quads. Now the kids have it so good, but they don't appreciate it. I had an awesome time in Madrid and my best time was in Marseille France. I ended up staying for two weeks and learned a McTwist. I am so happy to get to skate again, but feel like I missed out on so much. These kids need so much schooling, but as a rollerskater I have learned to keep to myself. I look back at the old days and realize I should have followed my dreams. It is pretty hard to be 38 and skate like you did when you were twelve, but I am enjoying every minute. I skated Portugal, Belguim, France, Gemany, Spain, and many others. It was an amazing experience, but I wish it were on quads. It's all good because we all have a second chance. Too bad our bodies can't handle the abuse. When I was in Europe I saw the best rollerskaters ever. Great memories.
