Aggressive skating meets parkour !!
: Hmmm....where I am from, "roller skates" always means quads and rarely does it mean inlines.

I think that's the wrong way round. To some, quads means roller skates. Nobody called roller skates quads 30 or even 20 years ago!

: ** I'm VERY proud of my culture! And I love being called a "Quad Skater"! I hate it when people call me an inline skater or worse.....rollerblader!! **

It's also not good to be called an inline skater (not to talk about roller blader), but's it's much easier to refute.

: On this issue, I might have to side with inline skaters. I love that they have taken to the streets! It is a total self expression, like the early days of skateboarders taking to empty swimming pools! But, I've never fully understood why vert is not bigger for inline skaters than it is. I think this is in large part due to their mistreatment by boarders and bikers, after inline skaters paved the way for the X-games. They were the ones to make it happen, and then they were ostracized and discarded by the hipster poser skateboarders who ran things. In disgust, bladers turned away from them and turned to the streets.

I have to agree that street inline skaters have much more of a culture of their own. Probably it's better in other parts of the worlds, but in Germany it's very aggro in a bad sense. They do "Too drunk to skate" contests for example. I don't like that idea.

: I'm glad you did rant. This is an enlightening discussion. I think that there is a different perception here in the U.S., than what you have there.

Could be. But in Germany, there once was a very active vert roller skating scene until about 1990. No one would call roller skates "quads". That started only with the inline hype.

I'm not into quads neither. I like my roller skates!

But don't let Claudine see those videos. She might want to imitate this ...

:
: What do you mean? Quads ARE roller skates!! :P
:

Quite simple: The name "quads" was introduced by inline skaters to clearly distinguish them from inline skates when inline skates where new. Back then it was not clear if you referred to inline skates when you talked about roller skates (it still isn't. Most people imagine inlines when I talk about roller skates).

But like an Inuit doesn't want to be called an Eskimo (OK, the analogy isn't perfect, but I hope you get what I mean) but rather proudly uses his own term, I like to call me a roller skater and not a "quadder". To me it is an expression of having an own roller skater culture (and an older one at that). And I think having an own culture is important to survive as a group. We won't survive if we're not proud of our own culture.

Just look at inline vert skaters: They are almost gone. I think that is in part due to the fact that inline skating was over-hyped and grew to fast. As a consequence, they didn't have time to sufficiently develop their culture. Wearing their pants above their knee pads is an attempt by them to distinguish themselves from other skaters, but it isn't enough to define an own culture. Rather, it's a bit stupid since they need new pants much more often.

OK, this was a rather long rant, but from time to time I just have to rant about the term "quads". Now I'm feeling better. ;-)

Nice pics, Joe, and very nice statement. Let's SKATE!

Reminds me of inliners and skateboarders quarreling here in Germany about who can call himself a "skater". I always told them the inline skaters would be more entitled to the term than the skateboarders since their device resembles ice skates much more. And I think ice skating is where the term skating comes from? Anyhow, I hope for peaceful co-existence of skateboarders, inliners, snake boarders, BMXers and roller skaters.

: Yep, I especially liked the barrow picture, I just can't imagine how you do it!

Yep, I do it all, one wheel, 2 wheels, 4 or 8 wheels. I love it all lol! May not be best, but I think I qualify as most overall. Honestly, uni is not that much different at times then rollerskating. Mounting is like a more extreme form of dropping in, slam your face to the asphalt in front of you to get on top lol. I think thats why I enjoy it since rollerskates will always be my fav.

I really get tired of the rivalry amongst them all. Being a rollerskater I seem to be accepted more so. But the rivalry is mostly between the skateboarders and inliners and if I'm classified as a truck skater, I have been attacked as when I'll get REAL skates. Oh well, so far noones asked me wheres my 2nd wheel lol. I dont care, if its FUN, yep I'm IN!!!! Its been awhile since I've been attacked. Maybe since they see I dabble in all, I'm accepting and wont bash others as this is better then that. Just have fun......

** Here, it was more of a way to let people know "which" skates you were using. Skaters themselves decided to coin specific terms to help alleviate any confusion. At that time I was skating outdoor marathons which had both types of skates. WE, as a group, brainstormed to create user specific terms other than just "Roller sktes".

The terms we ended up with were :

'Conventional roller skates, Quads, & Eights.'
&
'Blades, inlines, & straights'

Cheers!

Now, it seems, more often that inlines are called "Aggressive Skates". But I think that is wrong since WE skate on aggressive skates too!

That footage was freekin awsome,,it was when inline vert went realy gymnastic that I lost interest.1080's(double 540)were a messy trick.Mind numbingly tech and balls to the wall but so far removed from any skate style and flow,,in my humble opinion.

Funny,I never liked words like agresive or extreme as skate terms.Take Brian Wainwright,Steve Caballero and that dood from the vid you posted, their styles and flow are very smooth and unagresive,,just beautiful to watch. There are many very agresive styles out there(Rollerball,Bob Burnquist)and I luv that too.Seems people want to label everything so they can and divide and control. The crew we skate with here in oz are all just skaters,,some of us just wear different foot ware

Get real skates,,get a reak haircut, get a real job,get a life. What there saying is do the standard boring thing that nearly every other sheep is doing or you might get tagged as different.Remember when a skate punk stood out like dogs balls, now every second kid is a ,todays version of a skate punk wearing the uniform, designed,LABELED and sold by big business, so that you dont have to think for youself and ,dare I say ,,make your own and BE yourself.
I dont try too hard to be different and yet I dont fit the bill.A,you dont fit in comment is a feather in my cap and I'll wear it with pride, build my own skates and wear only the labels of bands and skate gear I like and recomend.

I recon the difference is skating within your ability and being good and skating on the very edge,,thats agresive.Thing is most agresive skaters trade off too much style to achive it.Both rad but diferent.I just dig good style.Once again,,just my opinion.Tony Hawk is super agresive but realy unstylish,,sorry.
