The trick to not ruining wheels while hockey sliding / stopping is to make sure that the wheels are always rolling at least a little bit. I never get flat spots.
You always need just the tiniest bit of angle when hockey sliding. Never have your wheels at exactly a 90° angle from your direction of approach or you WILL get flat spots. Also, it helps to buy good wheels.
